Comprehensive Automotive Mobility Solutions

This presentation will cover a range of topics pertaining to personal automotive mobility solutions. It will assist individuals seeking vehicle mobility solutions in understanding the unique process involved in evaluating a customer's capabilities, and selecting and purchasing an appropriate automotive transportation solution. Additionally, this session will give an automotive mobility industry overview, review which manufacturer's are involved in the mobility field, give a road map for the process involved in selecting and purchasing a vehicle, review mobility solutions from a customer standpoint, and provide resource links and handouts. This session will also review the solution categories of wheelchair accessible vehicles, seating systems, hand controls, and wheelchair docking devices.

This track will address topics pertaining to the education and treatment of students with autism spectrum disorders. Topics will be of interest to family members, educational professionals and others who serve this population. Presentations will be given by the experienced staff from the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities with the University of Florida in Jacksonville.

Using Natural Environment Training to Teach Language Skills to Students with Autism
Presenter: Mae Barker, PhD, BCBA
Natural Environment Training (NET) occurs in the student’s typical settings, uses materials inherent to these settings, capitalizes on the child’s motivation to communicate, and uses reinforcement specific to the nature of the interaction. At the core of NET is the “discrete trial,” an ordered teaching sequence starting with an instructional opportunity, followed by student responding, and then teacher prompting and delivery of reinforcement contingent on the student’s response. This talk will cover the steps involved in planning and implementing NET for teaching verbal behavior (i.e., language) to students with autism and provide video examples. Data sheets for monitoring student acquisition of skills and online resources will also be provided.

Autism: A Parent’s Perspective

This talk focuses on how parents respond to their child receiving a diagnosis of autism and the journey that parents face. The five stages of grief are discussed, and how parents might respond to intervention depending on where they are in this process. This presentation includes video of parents with more than 1 child with autism who share information from their experiences.

Planning and Supporting ASD Students in Inclusive Settings

This training will focus on planning for inclusion for students currently being served in the self-contained autism classroom as well as how to best support students who are currently being included for portions or whole days in the general education classroom. Participants will learn how to (1) write goals to plan for inclusion; (2) utilize accommodations and modifications; (3) write goals to support students in inclusive settings; (4) write a plan for coordinating the student’s educational team. During the training participants will create a team plan specifically for their student(s), create sample accommodations and modifications to support their student(s), and write sample goals targeting planning and supporting inclusion that can be implemented after the training.

The IEP process can be confusing and intimidating for all involved. IEP 101 was developed to empower all the participants with knowledge. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the scientific approach to understanding human behavior. Problem behavior can be defined as behaviors that are disruptive, stand in the way of learning, and put the individual and surrounding others at risk of injury. ABA closely looks at what triggers problem behavior and the consequences that follow. This presentation will cover Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), a systematic method of determining the functions of behavior. Once the function of the problem behavior has been determined it is necessary to write a Behavior Support Plan, specific to the individual with protocols listed describing how to intervene when problem behavior occurs. This talk will also cover the importance of data collection, ways in which to collect data, and teaching students appropriate behaviors to replace challenging behaviors. Sample data sheets will be provided to participants as well as a list of additional online resources.

CMS will address the special benefits and provisions for individuals with disabilities that include eligibility requirements, the enrollment process, Medicare health plan choices available to people with a disability, including Medicare prescription drug coverage, MEDIGAP options for people with a disability and Information sources. We will also provide a list of resources with additional information about Social Security disability programs and Medicare. Since the Medicare provisions for people with a disability can be complicated, it is important to know where to look for more information.

The Center on Disabilities at California State University, Northridge offers the Assistive Technology Applications Certificate Program (ATACP). Now in its 12th year and with over 2,500 graduates to date, the ATACP is the largest Assistive Technology (AT) certificate program in the country.
In our training workshops you will learn the practical tools and techniques of AT accommodations and applications in meeting the needs of individuals with various disabilities in many settings. In addition to the principles of human needs, environment and tasks, we will address the tools and techniques behind the assistive technology which will enhance the effectiveness of your training experience. Designed for newcomers to the field of AT, practicing professionals interested in the latest updates, or family members seeking information and networking resources, the ATACP meets the 100 hour requirement for a certificate in Assistive Technology Applications with 10 CEUs from CSUN's College of Extended Learning and the Center on Disabilities.

In between these fun and very exciting games join the teams on the court and participate in games and demos with the players, some of whom played on the 2007 Gold Medal winning champion team in Japan.
